STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Israeli officials said Tuesday that a small portion of people who received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination experienced heart inflammation.
A link is likely, said the Israel Health Ministry. Pfizer, in a statement, said the company was aware of the Israeli observations of myocarditis and said no causal correlation to its vaccine had been established, according to a report from Reuters.
The findings are under review. Pfizer meets on a regular basis with Israeli health officials, said the company.
Despite the potential link, myocarditis has been found in 275 vaccine recipients in the country — out of more than 5 million. The cases were discovered between December and May, and patients who experienced heart inflammation spent no more than four days in the hospital, with a vast majority of cases classified as mild, according to an Israeli study conducted by three teams of experts.
“There is some probability for a possible link between the second vaccine dose and the onset of myocarditis among young men aged 16 to 30,” said the study’s findings. “This link was found to be stronger among the younger age group, 16 to 19, compared to other age groups. This link became weaker the older the vaccinated individual is. In most cases myocarditis took the form of mild illness that passed within a few days.”
A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory group last month recommended further study of the possibility of a link between myocarditis and mRNA vaccines, which include those from Pfizer and Moderna Inc., reported Reuters.
Israel is in the process of deciding whether or not vaccinations should be given to citizens ages 12-15: “We shall issue a public update once a decision has been made,” said the study’s conclusion.
