SALEM — Perry Township Trustee Jim Armeni, who also serves as the Columbiana County Recorder after being elected to that post last fall, said he’s running for trustee again.
“I have over 30 combined years of experience in elective and appointed public service. I have had the privilege of earning the confidence and trust of the people over the years. I feel my knowledge of local government has been a valuable asset in continuing to move Perry Township forward. I have enjoyed the last four years as Trustee,” he wrote in a press release.
When Armeni was elected to the county office, he was asked if there was a conflict in serving both positions, since he indicated he wasn’t resigning as trustee.
He did some research and sought out a prosecutor’s opinion which supported what he thought — the two offices are compatible and don’t conflict with each other. There was also a precedent set when the late Gary Williams served as both county recorder and Madison Township trustee.
In a phone conversation, Armeni, 61, said serving as both trustee and recorder has been more manageable than he expected, noting it’s been good and he’s been able to satisfy the requirements for both positions.
If re-elected as trustee, the term starting Jan. 1 will be Armeni’s second with Perry Township.
He previously served on Salem City Council and as Salem City Auditor, both elected positions.
“I have shown leadership when needed in the township and good judgment to get the best solutions for the taxpayers. I look forward in serving another term,” Armeni wrote.
In his press release, the priorities he said he’ll continue to work on as trustee include: “support the Columbiana County Sheriff and Drug Task Force with a township police officer to combat the war on drugs; (and) maintain a high level of police and fire protection along with other public services that our township residents have come to expect while ensuring a very strong financial township and keeping taxes as low as possible for the township residents.”
Armeni graduated from Salem High School in 1978 and attended Kent State Salem. He and his wife, Lorrie, a retired teacher, have two sons, Jim Jr. and Ross, both graduates of Salem High School. Jim Jr. lives in Canton and Ross serves in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in New Jersey.
