The San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy shot Tuesday, March 23, in Hesperia was in critical condition after surgery, the department said.

The most recent information came in a Twitter message about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. No update was immediately available Wednesday morning.

No new information on the identity and condition of the man believed to have shot the deputy was available as well. He was shot by deputies during a gun battle.

The deputy was found wounded in a parking lot after investigating a report of an unwanted person at a storage facility near Bear Valley Road and Jacaranda Avenue, the Sheriff’s Department said. A person used the deputy’s radio to call for help.

Other deputies searched the area for the red Ford Explorer reported by a caller from the storage facility. When they tried to pull it over, the driver sped off, prompting a pursuit into open desert. The man got out of the SUV and exchanged gunfire with deputies, the department said.
