BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger doesn’t have to move out of the corner office for another term, but it was an extremely close race.
The mayor says he is honored to serve another three years and humbled by the close margin.
The runner-up, Progressive City Councilor Max Tracy, is disappointed. He fell short by 129 votes according to the city’s unofficial count. That’s less than 1%.
It’s not the closest mayoral election in Burlington but it’s the closest Weinberger has seen.
He congratulated opponents Max Tracy and independent Ali Dieng on hard-fought races and impressive campaigns.
Weinberger says there is more work ahead to address the concerns of Burlingtonians, especially after such a close race.
“Tonight’s results have shown us that we have hard work to do to forge a new consensus about where we go as a community on public safety, housing, racial justice and more. I think we all agree with President Tracy that the goal of local government must be to create a Burlington that works for all. In the years ahead, I will continue to listen and work with the council and all Burlingtonians to find that new consensus and secure that progress,” said Weinberger, D-Burlington.
I also spoke with Tracy and Dieng. Both men congratulated Weinberger on his victory and said they look forward to continuing their work on the City Council.
“I mean I’m certainly disappointed. It’s really hard to lose no matter what, but when you come this close to something that, you know, you dreamed about, something that you fought so hard for, it’s really hard to come up just that close and not quite cross the finish line,” Tracy said.
“The campaign in general I think we have demonstrated something really meaningful and unprecedented,” Dieng said. “And I think our message also resonated with many people.”
Tracy says he will not ask for a recount of the votes, saying it’s unlikely to change the outcome.
