DETROIT – A Detroit Police officer shot a man Thursday after the suspect allegedly threatened people with an assault rifle at a gas station, ran from police, hid in house and then pointed the rifle at officers, police said.

The incident began around 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, when Detroit Police officers were called to an east side gas station where an intoxicated man allegedly brandished an “AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle,” Detroit police Cmdr. Darin Szilagy told reporters. The man was “agitated.” He allegedly threatened customers and the store clerk with the weapon, and demanded the clerk let him behind the counter. The clerk refused.

The suspect fled the gas station before police arrived, he said. Officers canvassed the area and eventually found the man who was still armed with the rifle. The suspect ignored commands to stop and surrender. Instead, he ran into a house.

A supervisor then declared the scene a barricaded gunman situation, Szilagy said.

While officers awaited additional resources, the man darted out onto the porch – with the rifle in hand – several times, he said. Each time, officers gave commands to put the gun down and surrender. He did not.

“The officers were very, very patient,” Szilagy said. “They were in a fatal-force situation at that time – almost from the beginning – but the officers tried the tactics that we use to de-escalate.”

Eventually, the suspect – still armed – came off the porch and began walking down the middle of the street toward officers who were blocking traffic from the scene, he said. The suspect pointed the assault rifle at an officer, and one officer fired a single round, which struck the suspect and “took him out of the fight,” Szilagy said.

Officers could see the man was hurt badly and decided not to wait for EMS, he said. They loaded him into a police car and transported him to a local hospital. The man is in temporary serious condition.

“Officers were faced with a very dangerous situation with an unstable individual,” Szilagy said. “We’re very pleased with how they performed. It’s unfortunate, but there was no other option – there was no pepper spray or taser option. The man had a long gun and could have been very dangerous.”

While the department was still working to identify the suspect, Szilagy speculated that he could be suffering from substance abuse or mental illness.

No civilians or officers were injured in the incident.

The Detroit Police Department Homicide Task Force is investigating the incident. The officer who fired the shot is on administrative leave pending the investigation. Criminal charges against the suspect are pending.
