FREMONT — A person was in critical condition following an apparent hit-and-run in Fremont’s Niles district early Tuesday, authorities said.
Fremont police said they received a report of a person down on the 100 block of J Street just after 6 a.m.
When police and Fremont Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene, “they located a person in the roadway and immediately began to render medical aid,” police said in a statement.
First responders initially thought the person might have suffered a medical emergency, but after further investigation, officers believe the person might have been struck by a car, police said.
“The person was transported to a local trauma center and is currently hospitalized in critical condition,” police said.
The person was with a dog at the time of the incident, though police said the dog was not injured and was recovered nearby.
Police are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run and urged witnesses or anyone with information to contact Traffic Officer Vincent Montojo at 510-790-6760.
