ANN ARBOR, MI – A 15-year-old boy is in serious condition after a man slammed the teen down in a parking lot and stomped his head 12 times, police say.
Keith Delamore Newbern, 21, was arrested in connection with the beating of two 15-year-old boys in a parking lot in the 2500 block of Jackson Avenue on Oct. 26, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.
Newbern, of Ypsilanti Township, was arraigned Friday Oct. 30 on one felony count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. say they
Police were called to the parking lot about 3:15 p.m. where they found the two teens. One suffered minor injuries while the other appeared to have a significant head injury and was going in and out of consciousness, police said.
The severely injured teen was taken to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital for treatment where he remains in serious condition, police said.
Detectives investigating the assault found a video posted on social media allegedly showing Newbern and another suspect, a juvenile, attack the pair, stomping the one teen in the head 12 times before fleeing, police said.
Investigators don’t believe the attack was random. Detectives discovered there was ongoing conflict between the two groups involving an incident from more than a year ago, police said.
The juvenile suspect’s role in the attack appeared to be minimal, leading to charges being submitted to the juvenile court system, police said.
Bond was set at $5,000 for Newbern. He is scheduled for a probable cause conference Nov. 12.
