An unidentified man is in critical condition after being attacked by a shark on Sunday. The attack occurred at the Great Barrier Reef, which is located off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
The New York Post reports that the 59-year-old man had been spearfishing prior to the attack. He was then airlifted to Townsville University hospital for treatment.
“There was obviously evidence of a very significant shark bite to the patient’s upper thigh, pelvic region,” stated David Humphreys, the doctor who saw over the man. Dr. Humphreys confirmed that the patient’s condition was dire, and that he was sent in for emergency surgery.
The Guardian notes that more Australians have been killed by unprovoked shark attacks in 2020 than they have been in previous years since 1934. They further state that it has been nearly 90 years since six people have died from unprovoked single shark bites in one year.
However, the article assures audiences that the total number of shark bites aligns with the yearly average that’s been seen over the past 10 years. BBC News confirms this, stating that, with concerns to shark attacks in general, “this year doesn’t necessarily stand out.” In fact, the last noticeable spike occurred in 2015, in which 32 attacks occurred.
With regards to the United States specifically, the Florida Museum noted that the country led the world in the total number of unprovoked shark attacks in 2019, beating Australia with 41 recorded shark attacks.
Updates on the 59-year-old man’s condition have yet to be released.
