LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – COVID-19 is spreading in long-term care facilities throughout La Crosse County
Right now nine facilities have at least one positive case between staff and residents.
The La Crosse Co. Health Department says in the last two weeks there have been 34 cases between four separate facilities.
Three of the five deaths in the county were people living in long-term facilities, but they were not all from the same facility.
As of Friday, 8.8% of long-term care residents in La Crosse County who became infected have died from the virus.
The health department said COVID-19 can spread rapidly through long-term facilities.
In one outbreak in the county staff tested positive during a routine screening but were asymptomatic.
By the time they found out they had the virus it had already spread to some residents in that facility.
The department said the most significant risk of infections in long-term care residents is from high levels of virus activity in the community.
