Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday. The school announced that Saban and Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne contracted COVID-19 after a round of scheduled team testing.
While the news may have been alarming to some, Saban's daughter, Kristen Saban Setas, took to Twitter shortly after the announcement to calm any concerns over Saban's immediate condition. She says that Nick Saban continued to coach the team for Saturday's scheduled game against the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs following his positive test.
"No symptoms," Kristen Saban Setas wrote. "He’s literally coaching practice from a Zoom call (muscle emoji). (I had permission to say this)."
Alabama announced the positive tests of Nick Saban and Greg Byrne, saying that both men were now in isolation.
"Both immediately left the facility and went to their homes to self-isolate after receiving that information," said Dr. Jimmy Robinson and Jeff Allen in a joint statement. "At this point in time, the positive tests are limited to those two individuals. All individuals who are considered high risk contacts have been notified and will follow quarantine guidelines. We will follow the SEC’s Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force Protocol for testing asymptomatic positives."
Nick Saban released the following statement after testing positive.
“I found out earlier this afternoon that I had tested positive for COVID-19. I immediately left work and isolated at home. At this time, I do not have any symptoms relative to COVID, and I have taken another PCR test to confirm my diagnosis. I informed our team of my positive test at 2 p.m. today on a Zoom call and let them know offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will oversee preparations at the complex while I work from home.”
Byrne also released his own statement regarding his contraction of the coronavirus.
“Today, I received notice that my COVID-19 test from this morning came back positive. Upon hearing the news, I immediately entered self-isolation and will remain at home and follow all guidelines. We’ve been diligent about mask wearing and social distancing from the start and want to continue to encourage you all to take the necessary precautions to help stop the spread of this virus for yourself and those around you.”
No. 2 Alabama (3-0) is scheduled to host No. 3 Georgia (3-0) in one of college football’s most anticipated games of the season this Saturday night. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said that the game is still scheduled to proceed, pending another scheduled round of testing by both schools on Thursday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Saturday’s scheduled game between LSU and Florida was postponed because of COVID-19 concerns.
The Southeastern Conference announced Wednesday that the game will be tentatively rescheduled for Dec. 12, the universal bye week for each team in the league in the 10-game, conference-only slate adopted for 2020. The Missouri-Vanderbilt game, which was also scheduled for this Saturday before positive tests from the Commodores, is also tentatively rescheduled for Dec. 12.
If Alabama and Georgia play on Saturday, Sarkisian is likely to take over the primary head coaching duties in Saban's absence.
"I watched practice today. I had a manager have a phone. If I wanted a play repeated, I said, 'Repeat that play so-and-so messed up,'" Saban told reporters after he worked from home during Wednesday's practice. "So I didn't leave the country or anything. I'm just right down the street and we have this technology so it's really unique. Now I don't have any experience in this, aight, so we're gonna do the best we can to keep everything as normal as possible."
