A man injured Tuesday in a gunfight outside of a Beaumont apartment complex is in stable condition Wednesday after being shot at several times and being grazed by a bullet to the head.

The shooting, which occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cypress Bend on Cornerstone Ct., was the result of an argument between two neighbors with a history of conflict, according to the Beaumont Police Department.

BPD is investigating it as an aggravated assault,

An eye-witness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Enterprise that he saw the argument and shooting occur from his open window right above the crime scene.

“I was studying with the window open and I heard two people arguing outside,” he said. “This is not the first time I have heard them arguing verbally, so I just looked out.”

After a shouted threat, one of the men produced a gun and fired two shots, the witness said.

“The dude standing right there ducked underneath his car, and began to shoot over the car,” the witness said. “He could have shot anybody.”

The suspect who initially fired fled the scene shortly after and entered an apartment on the other side of the complex, where he later surrendered to police.

“When officers arrived they located a gunshot victim of a shooting,” Beaumont Police Officer Haley Morrow said in a statement. “The second person involved was located in a nearby apartment and was detained.”

Prior to the arrest, officers blocked off the entrance to the apartment complex as the suspect exited a unit adjacent to the crime scene, along with a woman and several children.

Morrow said that multiple witnesses are being interviewed as the investigation continues.

A letter distributed to residents said that the shooting was “an isolated incident as we understand it,” adding that any further details could be obtained from the Beaumont Police Department.

Bullets from the exchange riddled a third person’s car with holes in the windshield, and shattered windows on the back of the vehicle.

The owner of the car, who has lived at the complex for over 12 years, told The Enterprise they planned on having the car towed anyway.

“We have never had anything like this happen out here like that before,” the car owner said. “This is a quiet neighborhood.”
