CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A Clarksburg public official’s health is improving after being shot over the weekend in an alleged carjacking.
City Councilmember Jim Malfregeot is recovering at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Antonio Dejesus, 33, allegedly shot Malfregot in the abdomen outside of Malfregot’s home Sunday evening. According to Clarksburg police, Dejesus took Malfregot’s car with his wife and mother-in-law in the vehicle.
Clarksburg Mayor Ryan Kennedy on Tuesday said Malfregeot was upgraded to serious condition.
“There are many more steps to full recovery, but we’re very glad it seems to be heading in the right direction,” Kennedy said on “MetroNews Talkline.”
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Dejesus pleaded guilty in 2014 to dealing heroin and received a 46-month prison sentence the following year. The case was transferred to the District of Delaware, as Dejesus is from the state.
Dejesus violated the terms of supervised released and spent 30 days in jail earlier this year.
Authorities were able to track Dejesus after the shooting to the Black Bear Express in Anmoore. Malfregeo’s wife and mother-in-law were not harmed in the incident.
