To the Editor:
Most people are familiar with the quote “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
This quote is attributed to Lord Acton, a 19th century British politician. Unfortunately, his observation about political power continues to be just as true today as it was back in the 19th century.
Recent polls continue to show that anywhere between 67% and 80% of our country’s citizens support the concept of Term Limits, regardless of whether the question is about a state or a federal election, or whether the question is about the legislature, the judiciary, or governors.
The polls also show there is strong support for term limits by the voters in both major political parties.
However, there appears to be a significantly different attitude toward term limits by the leadership of the two parties. The Democrat machine has run the city of Chicago for decades, and the city of Chicago has a long history of corruption.
Illinois Speaker of the House Mike Madigan is the perfect example of why we need term limits in the state of Illinois. Speaker Madigan was recently identified as being “Individual A” in the ComEd bribery case.
Joe Biden has been in Washington, D.C., since 1973, Chuck Schumer since 1981, and Nancy Pelosi since 1987. Our country’s Founders would have opposed the concept of career politicians, and George Washington pledged to serve no more than two terms.
In Federalist No. 1, Alexander Hamilton wrote about “the perverted ambition of men who will hope to aggrandize themselves” and who “will flatter themselves with fairer prospects of elevation…”
Unfortunately, our country has a long history of career politicians (at all levels of government) who have enriched themselves at the expense of the taxpayers.
