A 20-year-old Fort Irwin soldier and her boyfriend were jailed after the woman’s 4-month-old son was admitted to a hospital with a brain injury and burns, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
Heaven Ramirez of Fort Irwin, which is northeast of Barstow, and 23-year-old Elisha Jones of Madera were arrested on suspicion of torture and child abuse causing coma or death, a news release said. Ramirez’s bail was set at $500,000; Jones’ bail was set at $1 million.
Investigators were alerted to the case on Monday, Sept. 14, when the victim was transferred from Weed Army Community Hospital to Loma Linda University Medical Center with the brain injury as well as second-and third-degree burns. The couple were arrested Tuesday.
“Medical staff ruled his injuries consistent with non-accident trauma child abuse,” the release said.
The child was in critical condition Friday.
Investigators ask anyone with information on the case to call Deputy Vanayes Quezada at 909-453-5161.
