WEST FRANKFORT (WSIL) -- Family, friends and co-workers are coming together tonight as COVID-19 has put a West Frankfort Emergency Management Service staffer in the hospital, in critical condition.
John Hampton Jr., known affectionately as "Little John," is a dispatcher with the West Frankfort Police Department. They say he began showing signs and symptoms of COVID-19 two weeks ago, tested positive, and began getting better before taking a turn for the worst last weekend.
Hampton is now in the COVID Unit at SIH Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, with complicated conditions, as he is battling pneumonia on top of the virus.
"With this, it just shows you that it's out there and it's dangerous," says Chief of Police John Prudent. "And Little John had some underlying health conditions, but he was taking precautions. He was wearing his mask, he was doing the things he was supposed to do, but it just shows you that we need to be vigilant in our day-to-day activities and making sure that we're protecting ourselves, because this one hit really close to home."
Prudent says Hampton has been a part of multiple agencies in our region, touching many lives, in many ways and they are praying for his recovery.
