A woman who has worked for the New Jersey Department of Children and Families for over 10 years was hospitalized in critical condition after she was shot Friday night in front of her Trenton home, officials said.
Trenton police officers were called to the 300 block of Walnut Street just before 9 p.m. after they received a report of more than 20 rounds fired in the area and found Vernetta McCray bleeding from her head on the porch of her Hampton Avenue home, a Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson told NJ Advance Media.
The spokesperson did not identify McCray, however Gov. Phil Murphy’s office did name her in a statement on Saturday night.
McCray was taken to a local hospital where remained in critical condition on Saturday, authorities said.
No arrests were made and no suspects were identified.
It was unclear if McCray was the target in the shooting, but Murphy’s office called the incident a “random act of gun violence.”
“Vernetta McCray has worked for the Department of Children and Families for over a decade, gaining the respect of her colleagues and serving countless children and families in Mercer County,” Murphy said in a statement. “This tragedy is yet another reminder of the toll that senseless gun violence takes on our communities. Our prayers are with Vernetta, her family, and her loved ones at this difficult time.”
