A driver was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries early this morning after rolling his vehicle in west Greeley.

Police and the Greeley Fire Department responded to the rollover about 3:45 a.m. in the 6700 block of 10th Street. Police say the driver was traveling east on 10th Street at a high rate of speed when he went onto the north shoulder as he left the roadway.

The vehicle struck the Greeley Fire Station 7 sign before striking the curb and vaulting into the air, where it then hit a tree, an electrical box and a city-owned weather instrument, as well as fiber optic connections. Part of the sign was destroyed, and the electrical box was moved off its foundation, cutting power to many in the area.

The vehicle flipped multiple times, trapping the driver in his seat belt in the rear passenger area. After he was rescued from the vehicle, he was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. The driver has not been identified.

Police have not yet said whether factors such as driving under the influence or distracted driving are being considered as possible contributors to the crash.
