PHOENIX — A suspect who assaulted a Sheriff’s Deputy into critical condition on Saturday morning was shot in a home in Tonopah on Saturday night.
Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect, 30-year-old Clinton Robert Hurley, and a home owner. Police were made aware of a shooting at around 6:30 p.m. and found the suspect not too far from the home, officials say.
The suspect was struck by the gunfire and taken to the hospital where he is in critical condition, officials say.
“It is with a sense of relief that I express to you that I am glad to know that he is off our streets,” Sheriff Paul Penzone said in a press conference on Saturday night.
Police opened a manhunt for Hurley earlier on Saturday after he attacked the deputy at approximately 10:55 a.m. in Avondale.
The suspect was being taken into custody on multiple felony warrants, officials say.
The deputy was found unconscious and bleeding from the face by another deputy near Van Buren Street and Dysart Road. He was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition, officials say.
The suspect took the deputy’s car, crashed through a fence and fled the area. Police believe he stole another vehicle.
He was considered armed and dangerous with multiple agencies are searching for him.
The suspect was previously released from the Department of Corrections in December for sex offenses against children, officials say.
The investigation is ongoing, officials say.
