An Israeli scuba diver came across a bit of sunken treasure that appears to date all the way back to the Crusades nearly a thousand years ago.
Local diver Shlomi Katzin was exploring off the coast of Israel in the Mediterranean when he noticed an array of ancient artifacts on the sea floor. Old anchors made of metal and stone and pottery shards appeared to have been revealed by shifting sands, but perhaps most impressive was a long sword like something straight out of Arthurian lore.
“The sword, which has been preserved in perfect condition, is a beautiful and rare find and evidently belonged to a Crusader knight,” said Nir Distelfeld from the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Robbery Prevention Unit. “It was found encrusted with marine organisms, but is apparently made of iron.”
The sword was found in an area that’s thought to be loaded with other pieces of history.
“The Carmel coast contains many natural coves that provided shelter for ancient ships in a storm, and larger coves around which entire settlements and ancient port cities developed,” explains Kobi Sharvit, Director of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Marine Archaeology Unit. “These conditions have attracted merchant ships down the ages, leaving behind rich archaeological finds.”
Sharvit added that the sword bolsters the case that the area was used for anchorage, perhaps as early as the Late Bronze Age four millennia ago.
Up next, the sword will be cleaned and analyzed before it is put on display for the public.
