A former police captain is reportedly in critical condition following a shooting in downtown Oakland.
Multiple media outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle, KRON and Oaklandside, are reporting that now-retired Oakland police captain Ersie Joyner was robbed at gunpoint just after 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Chevron on the 1700 block of Castro Street.
It is unclear who shot first, but surveillance footage obtained by the Chronicle found that a minute into the altercation, Joyner pulled out a gun and fired repeatedly at the alleged suspects. One reportedly died at the scene, according to KRON.
Joyner was shortly after transported to a nearby hospital.
Joyner was previously the head of Oakland police's Ceasefire program, a community-oriented approach to gun violence, before his retirement in 2019.
Anyone with information about the shooting can call Oakland police's homicide unit at (510) 238-3821 or the tip line at (510) 238-7950.
Oakland police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from SFGATE.
