The female African elephant calf born at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium’s International Conservation Center in Somerset County remains in guarded condition.
New mother Sukuri gave birth to the big bundle of joy on July 18. Despite several ailments, the calf continues to be active and bright between bouts of nursing and resting. While at the 1,000-acre conservation, research, education, breeding and training facility, she has been receiving care 24 hours a day.
“She had a good week and mom is doing a fantastic job. We are encouraged by the current trends, however, she remains in guarded condition as we continue to closely monitor her health and behavior,” says Dr. Joe Gaspard, director of animal health, science and conservation at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. “Elephant specialists from around the country are working closely to assist our team’s efforts as the zoo is using every resource available to aid in the calf’s recovery.”
“Hamilton” tickets go on sale Oct. 18
Tickets for “Hamilton,” the Tony- and Grammy-winning musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton, will go on sale Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. Performances will be held Feb. 22 through March 13, 2022.
There is a maximum purchase limit of nine tickets per account. When tickets go on sale, prices will range from $49 to $179, with a select number of premium seats available from $299. There will be a lottery for 40 $10 seats for all performances. Details will be announced closer to the event.
“It’s tempting to get tickets any way you can,” producer Jeffrey Seller says. “There are many sites and people who are selling overpriced, and in some cases, fraudulent tickets. For the best seats, the best prices and to eliminate the risk of counterfeit tickets, all purchases for the PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh engagement should be made through TrustArts.org.”
Virtual field trips for groups and educators
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is hosting two virtual field trips for local educators and group leaders from Oct. 15 through Nov. 5. JazzTime! and Sugar Skull! are currently accepting online registrations.
JazzTime! is a 30-minute production that allows students to experience the styles and elements of jazz through a special musical created and performed by local talents.
Sugar Skull! takes participants on a Día de los Muertos adventure with a charismatic candy skeleton as he follows the music toward the ultimate party.
The virtual sessions are produced by Pittsburgh Cultural Trust with support from PNC Grow Up Great and are presented in partnership with the EQT Children’s Theater Festival and Children’s Theater Series.
Advocacy Action Day for Black women
The Black Women’s Policy Center is calling attention to issues that impact Black women and their families — and rallying for change — during an online advocacy action day on Oct. 26. Participants will gain tools for connecting with their legislators and bringing awareness to issues, including the need for national paid family and medical leave and raising the minimum wage.
