DMX has been hospitalized after suffering an apparent drug overdose on the evening of Friday, April 2, as TMZ reports and Variety and Billboard confirm. The rapper born Earl Simmons reportedly experienced a heart attack after the alleged overdose occurred and was taken to a hospital in White Plains, New York, where he is reportedly in the critical care unit.

“We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers as well as respect our privacy as we face these challenges,” his family said in a statement.

DMX’s lawyer, Murray Richman, stated to News 12 Westchester that he was in “grave condition.” Though Richman told PIX 11 News that DMX had been taken off life support on Saturday afternoon, he later told Rolling Stone that he had received “wrong information” and that DMX remained on life support. “We are concerned. It would be disingenuous of me to suggest that I’m not a worried man at this particular point,” Richman had told PIX 11.

TMZ subsequently updated their report with a statement attributed to DMX’s representative. “Last night Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at home,” it reads. “At this time he remains in ICU in critical condition. Earl has been a warrior his entire life. This situation represents yet another road he must conquer.” The statement continues:

The Simmons Family appreciates the overwhelming outpouring of heartfelt love, encouragement, support and prayers for Earl. Earl is someone whose life and music have been a source of inspiration and strength to so many people around the world. It is reassuring to see his fans return that same passion and energy to him during his time of need.

On Sunday (April 4), The New York Times reported that DMX was still on life support and in a “vegetative state,” as the rapper’s manager Nakia Walker told the Times. “We’re just praying,” Walker added. The report stated that some of DMX’s relatives have been allowed to see him at the hospital.

Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for DMX and White Plains City Police Department for further comment.
