The Geneva Town Board has taken action on short-term rentals.

A new local law, which proponents say has more teeth, was approved after a public hearing earlier this summer.

Supervisor Mark Venuti said the zoning regulations around short-term rentals, which the Town has had on the books for years, was among the first in the state to be adopted.

“We first passed these regulations three or four years ago. That was our first foray into it,” he said. “At that time people asked us to ban rentals. We can’t do that, but we can regulate it.”

“We are hearing from residents who are next to properties being rented out, and they are constantly disturbed by renters and can’t get the owners to respond,” he told the Finger Lakes Times. “The property owners are also charging high rents and driving up property values … but it’s nobody you can deal with locally. They are driving residents away and breaking up neighborhoods.”

One of the main requirements is that property owners must live locally for seven months out of the year, to ensure that they are properly supervised.
