The number of San Diego County residents diagnosed with COVID-19 rose by 529 cases on Friday, the highest daily figure in more than a week, but long-range trends are more promising, according to figures released Saturday by county health officials.

The number was up from the 380 cases reported on Thursday and 381 on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the number of people testing positive for the disease represented 6 percent of the 9,161 tests reported Friday. That percentage of positive tests has fluctuated from 4 percent to 8 percent in recent weeks and it’s just slightly above the 14-day average of 5.4 percent. Four new deaths were reported Friday.

There were three new community outbreaks of the disease reported on Friday, for a total number of 40 over the previous week. Cumulatively, the largest percentage of those testing positive are young adults, with 25.5 percent ages 20 to 29 and 18.9 percent ages 30 to 39.

On Friday there were 400 people hospitalized in San Diego County with COVID-19, down from 420 on Thursday. Of those, 122 were in intensive care units. Those 400 patients represent less than 10 percent of the 4,442 hospital beds now in use countywide. The county has 6,112 hospital beds available. COVID-19 patients now represent about one-quarter of ICU patients.

Since the number of new cases peaked at more than 600 cases a day between July 4 and July 7 — triggering a mass closure of indoor service businesses, restaurants and bars — the general trend line of new cases has gradually dropped. The spike in cases last month appears to have been triggered by the reopening of businesses on June 12.

County health officials make decisions on new health orders when three or more “trigger” criteria are met. There are positive signs in many areas, including a more-than-adequate number of available hospital beds and supply of personal protection equipment, and fewer than 8 percent of those tested having the coronavirus.

But there are still three triggering criteria that need to be overcome for the county to ease the public health orders. The case rate per 100,000 people stands at 120.4. That’s down from 153.2 on July 26 but still above the trigger point of 99 cases or fewer per 100,000. Of the 529 new cases Friday, investigations were launched on 31 percent of them, which is steadily rising but below the 70 percent required to avoid a trigger. And the seven-day figure of 40 community outbreaks far exceeds the trigger point of 7.

Since early March, 29,577 people in San Diego County have been diagnosed with the coronavirus and 565 have died.
