MEDINA, Ohio -- Mayor Dennis Hanwell wants to continue his service to the city.
“Things are going well. I’ve got a great working relationship with the council, the county, the surrounding townships. We’ve accomplished quite a bit in the last three terms,” Hanwell said.
To that end, the mayor has announced that he will be running for a fourth four-year term.
A recent press release outlined some of Hanwell’s accomplishments. During his time as mayor, in cooperation with City Council, most of the streets in the industrial sector, along with the infrastructure beneath them, were reconstructed.
The improved roadways have helped to spur nearly full occupancy of the city’s industrial buildings, as well as an increase in the number of jobs, the press release noted.
The widening of North Court Street also led to new commercial construction, as well as renovations to existing buildings in the area.
Hanwell explained in a phone interview that he helped create a community government model similar to a model used during his time at the police department, where he moved up the ranks from patrolman to chief.
“What it is, is all the employees in the city are looking out to keep the city upkept, keep the city clean, replace signs as they need it, fix roads as they need it. It makes the city shine to make a good first impression day in and day out,” said Hanwell.
“That takes a lot of work. That takes a lot of effort.”
According to the press release, Hanwell also collaborated with Medina Township to provide fire services at a lower cost. He also helped to facilitate a partnership with Lafayette Township to provide policing services.
The City of Medina Dispatch Center now provides 911 and dispatching services for fire and EMS for the city, as well as for Medina and Montville townships and policing dispatch for Lafayette Township, according to the press release.
The press release and the mayor shared that Hanwell and the city have successfully collaborated with the schools, the townships and the county and that the mayor continues to look for new opportunities to work together.
