Long Beach Councilwoman Suzie Price will seek a third term during next year’s election, despite opposing a 2018 charter amendment that paved the way for her to appear on the ballot more than twice — citing several ongoing initiatives she wants to see through.

Price, who represents the city’s Third District, announced that she would run for a third and final term via email on Saturday, May 22. Price, a lead deputy prosecutor for Orange County, will join Ninth District Councilman Rex Richardson in seeking a third term. Councilwoman Stacy Mungo, who represents District 5, and Seventh District Councilman Roberto Uranga have not announced whether they will run for another term. Mayor Robert Garcia has not said whether he will seek a third term.

First District Councilwoman Maria Zendejas will run for a first full term next year after winning a special election in 2019 to succeed Lena Gonzalez, who vacated that sear after getting elected to the state Senate.

The city’s primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, June 7, 2022, the same day as the statewide midterm primary.

“I know that the election is over a year away,” Price wrote in her email, “but I want you and all Third District residents to feel confident about the future of our community, about the future of our city, and the future of your leadership.”

Long Beach’s District 3 is in the southeastern portion of the city, generally running from the coast north to Atherton Street and from Redondo Avenue east to the Orange County border. The district includes Belmont Shore and the Cal State Long Beach campus.

Price, who won a runoff election in 2014 to succeed Councilman Gary DeLong, has spent much of her council tenure focusing on issues related to her public safety background, including chairing the council’s Public Safety Committee until last year.

In 2018, she publicly opposed a ballot measure that sought to change the city’s rules on term limits.

Before Measure BBB, incumbents could appear on the ballot two times maximum — including the first time they won a seat on the council — but could serve as many terms as they’d like if they won as write-in candidates. Measure BBB, which passed with 57% voter approval, allowed them to appear on the ballot three times. But after three terms, councilmembers would be termed out.

Price, at the time, said she didn’t support increasing the term limits during that election, because an incumbent’s name on the ballot might stop newcomers. She said then that she would run as a write-in if a third term made sense — an option that is now moot.

The councilwoman, in a phone interview, cited ongoing projects that she’s focused on completing.

“I had a long talk with my team, and there are some priority projects still in the queue that we need to get done,” Price said Monday. “We need to get Studebaker Road paved, and we need to complete the pumps for Alamitos Bay. I’m focused on that.”

Alamitos Bay currently relies on pumps at the AES Alamitos and Haynes power plants sucking water and creating circulation. Those power plants have been required to convert to air-cooled processes, ending the need to pump water. While Alamitos Bay is impacted by tides, the narrow entrance means tidal surge is not enough to keep water quality acceptable.

A replacement pump project has been estimated to cost up to $30 million.

If Price faces multiple challengers and no one gets a majority of the votes during the June 7, 2022, primary, the top two finishers would head to a run off on Nov. 8 of that year.
