A young child is in critical condition after gunfire erupted near a southwest Denver intersection Monday evening.
The girl is one of two people injured in the shooting that began about 5 p.m. Monday near the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Bates Avenue.
Denver police Chief Paul Pazen confirmed Tuesday that the girl is very young but would not state her exact age. An adult male also was hospitalized.
Police have not released further details about the shooting.
No arrests had been made in the shooting as of Tuesday morning. Denver police are expected to provide an update on the case at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The little girl is one of five people shot in Denver on Monday.
In addition to the South Federal Boulevard shooting, three people were shot in connection to an attempted burglary in the east Denver neighborhood of Montclair. The owner of the burglarized home was killed, another woman in the home was shot and injured, and one of the burglary suspects was shot and killed by Denver police.
Eleven children have been killed in Denver homicides this year. Eighty-three people have died in homicides across the city in 2020 — the highest number of killings recorded in a single year since 2004.
