Police early Saturday identified a man suspected of leaving the scene of a deadly pedestrian crash Friday evening that killed one and left another in critical condition.

Kerra Elizabeth Atkins, 28, and Joshua Michael Cuellar, 20, were walking eastbound along the westbound lane in the 700 block of Kranek Road near Merrill Heights in northeast Harris County, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Charley Lee Lenderman, 87, was driving westbound in a Lexus SUV, struck the pair and left the scene, officials said.

The sheriff's office is investigating the crash, in a poorly-lit area near U.S. 90, as a likely hit and run. In a social media post, Capt. John Shannon, a watch commander for the department, said Lenderman "seemed confused" and sought medical treatment.

Both Atkins and Cuellar were rushed via helicopter to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center where Atkins died about two hours later. Cuellar remains in critical condition, police said Saturday morning.

Police were then called a couple miles away to where they located Lenderman, with this SUV showing signs of being involved in the crash.

"It is possible he has some kind of dementia issues," said Eric Albers, an investigator with the department's vehicle crimes division.

Albers said Atkins and Cuellar were believed to be walking back to her family's home from a trip to a Wal-Mart about a mile from the crash scene.

"It is a very dark area and a very narrow road," Albers said. "There are no sidewalks in this area, you are either walking in the field or walking in the road."

In an unrelated incident around the same time, police said a woman died after she tried to dart across a busy street and was struck by one driver and run over by another Friday night in Cypress Station.

Deputies responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. in the 100 block of FM 1960 Road West, which was initially reported as a hit and run. The sheriff's office said the woman, who has not been identified, failed to yield and was struck by the driver of an eastbound Mercedes. After the woman was knocked to the ground, she landed in an adjacent lane where she was run over by the driver of a passing Subaru sedan.

The woman was pronounced dead at Houston Northwest Medical Center, according to the sheriff’s office.
