Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is expected to announce a short-term extension to the health department’s epidemic order aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

Whitmer is scheduled to provide an update regarding COVID-19 during a 2:30 p.m. virtual press conference Monday, Dec. 7, alongside Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive for the Department of Health and Human Services, and Robert Gordon, MDHHS director.

The governor’s office did not confirm a short-term extension was coming Monday, though multiple sources familiar with the administration’s plan confirmed the extension to MLive.

The state health department put the initial three-week pause into place on Wednesday, Nov. 18, with the goal of reducing indoor gatherings where coronavirus is known to spread. The order shut down indoor dining at restaurants, organized sports, casinos and in-person learning at high schools and colleges. It also restricted gatherings to a maximum of two households and required employers to allow remote work if possible.

On Monday, the Michigan Health & Hospital Association voiced support for an extension of the order.

“Michigan was on the path to record COVID-19 case rates, deaths and hospitalizations when this order was adopted in November,” the group said in a news release. “Today, our hospitals continue to face critical healthcare worker staffing shortages and troubling bed capacity numbers. Our teams on the front lines are exhausted as this second surge continues; we never truly recovered from the first. Now, data is indicating slight declines in COVID-19 emergency department visits, daily admissions and total hospitalizations.

“As physicians, we’re telling you: these measures are working.”

Statewide, the seven-day average of new cases is 6,430 per day-- down from a seven-day average of 6,759 a week ago. But the seven-day average positivity rate is 14.4% -- up from 13% a week ago.

Hospitalizations climbed from 3,792 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 on Nov. 18, to 4,326 patients on Nov. 30. As of Friday, Dec. 4, hospitalizations had declined to 4,113 COVID-19 patients.

Last week, Whitmer said her administration wanted to get a few more days of information under their belts before making a determination on a possible extension.
