HOLLISTER – A police officer shot and injured a man at a home in Hollister early Tuesday, authorities said.

The man was in stable condition at a hospital, the Hollister Police Department according to a news release.

Officers were called to the residence on Kimberly Court at 7:30 a.m. for a report of a family member who was possibly violent and had access to kitchen knives, police said.

Police said the man approached the officers as they spoke with family members and refused to take his hands out of his pockets. When the officers tried to talk to the man inside the home, he was uncooperative and eventually pulled out a “large knife,” police said.

The man then started a fire by turning on the stove and placing items on the burner, police said. He reportedly stood between the fire and the officers and threw several items at them, including one that was on fire.

Police said the man continued to throw furniture and other items around the room and threatened the officers. Attempts to de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful, and at one point, an officer shot the man in the stomach, causing him to drop the knife, police said.

The officers secured the man and gave him first aid until paramedics arrived, police said.

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting at the request of police.

“The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office has a vast amount of experience investigating officer-involved shootings and the Hollister Police Department is grateful for their assistance and the assistance of the San Benito Sheriff’s Office and the San Benito County District Attorney’s Office,” police said.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, per policy.

Police did not release any other information about the shooting. Body-worn camera footage will be released when the investigation is finished or within 45 days, police said.
