MUSCATINE, Iowa–As a local company, Carver Pump has always cared about helping end food insecurity in Muscatine County. In the past, Carver Pump employees had competed against each other to see who could donate the most food in company-wide matching drives. Once a quarter, a group of volunteers would even donate their time to help Riverbend Food Pantry unload deliveries they made to Muscatine Center for Social Action. When food insecurity began to rise in Muscatine County due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the layoffs it brought, Carver Pump knew they wanted to do something. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine’s Community Continuity matching fund, Carver Pump donated $28,570.88 to the Salvation Army of Muscatine County’s Food Pantry, which the organization will receive as monthly payments through the end of December.

According to Megan Randoll, human resource manager for Carver Pump, the company’s employees wanted to make a big difference after they heard about the Pandemic Pantry food drive. “We wanted to do something substantial,” she said. We know people will not bounce back right away, maybe not in a few months, maybe not in a year.”

In the past, Carver Pump had made its food drives social affairs. With social distancing curtailing such activities, Randoll organized a different approach.

Randoll emailed each employee, asking if they would like to donate a portion of their paycheck each month to support the Salvation Army’s food pantry. Within a week, many had agreed. Collectively, employees pledged, $7,142.72, which Carver Pump matched for a total of $14,285.44. Next, Randoll reached out to the Community Foundation, and asked if they could match at least part of their donation with money from the Community Continuity Fund, which the Community Foundation set up specifically to help offset the impacts of COVID-19. Within a day, Randoll received good news, “They were able to match the whole thing,” she proudly shared. This allowed Carver Pump to donate $28,570.88. The pantry will receive this in increments, with a lump sum from the Community Foundation arriving soon and monthly installments from Carver Pump.

After making such a large donation, Carver Pump feels extremely pleased to have helped out so much. “To say that this was our employees makes us so proud,” stated Randoll. She also hopes it will inspire others to support local nonprofits as well. “I hope this encourages other companies and individuals in the community,” she added. “Every small donation adds up!”
