Topline

Despite the increasing popularity among Republican politicians of the phrase “cancel culture,” which featured in former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, a poll has found that nearly half of Americans are unfamiliar with it, throwing into doubt its efficacy as a political talking point.

Key Facts

What began as a way to describe efforts to police behavior on college campuses has morphed into a catch-all term for public shaming and ostracization, and it reached a high watermark during the 2020 presidential campaign when Trump repeatedly warned supporters: “they want to cancel you.”

Now pro-Trump politicians like Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) have made it a cornerstone of their political movements and a lens through which to discuss divisive cultural issues.

But that ubiquity in right-wing circles has not translated to universal recognition among the broader public: a HuffPost/YouGov poll of 1,000 Americans released Tuesday found that just 48% have even heard of the term “cancel culture.”

Familiarity with it doesn’t fall easily along any demographic or partisan lines: 50% of independents haven’t heard of it, compared to 47% of Democrats and 46% of Republicans, though 2020 voters have slightly more awareness.

Only 22% of Americans who have heard of the term have actually used it, though 67% of those who were aware of it said it is a “very” or “somewhat” serious problem in the country today, compared to just 24% who said it is “not very” or “not at all” serious.

Crucial Quote

“This is the number one issue for the country to address today,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), one of Trump’s top allies in Congress, said in a Fox News interview on Sunday. “If we don't push back on this and stop it and stand up ... for the constitution, the First Amendment, it will only get worse.”

Surprising Fact

Trump defense attorney Michael van der Veen sought to whip up support among GOP senators by dismissing the impeachment trial as “constitutional cancel culture” and a "deliberate attempt by the Democrat party to smear, censor and cancel” the former president.

What To Watch For

Cancel culture is likely to be a key talking point for the 2022 election cycle. The National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate GOP campaign arm, sent a text to supporters earlier this month addressed from Hawley declaring, “He’s counting on YOU to END CANCEL CULTURE” and “stop liberal censorship!”
