A man is in critical condition after a shooting involving police officers in the Bronx on Sunday.
The NYPD says three officers approached two men who were spraying graffiti on a storefont on Third Avenue near East 153rd Street in Melrose just after midnight.
The officers chased the men after they tried to run away. This lead to a struggle as they attempted to arrest one of the men. Officials say that's when that person pulled out a gun and fired three shots at the officers -- missing them.
All three officers returned fire, striking the suspect several times. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition. Police are still looking for the second man who fled the scene. The NYPD's Chief of Department said the body cameras worn by the officers have been viewed by the department for the investigation.
"As the investigation continues, detectives are still looking for the second suspect who fled on foot," said NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. "The officers were taken to a local hospital to be evaluated and are fortunately are uninjured. Tonight's shooting underscore the dangers our brave officers face every day as they keep the people of this city safe."
Investigators recovered a semi automatic handgun at the scene. The hospitalized suspect had previously been arrested.
